MOD 8-INTELLIGENCE COLLECTION SYSTEMS
Between strategic, tactical, and operational scopes, each indicates the type of intelligence they want to gather as they are looking for it to directly impact a specific goal. For this assignment, the focus will be on tactical and operational scopes of intelligence. The main difference between the two is the type of intelligence that aids the operations they focus on and how the intelligence is applied.
Tactical intelligence is focused on the immediate capabilities of an opposing force, which can include things such as the number of personnel, what they're equipped with, they're infrastructure, etc. This can be provided from several different sources ranging from IMNIT from satellite and drone photographs to HUMINT from individuals that don't believe in the cause that opposing force is serving for. This activity can be events driven. For example, as the war in Ukraine began, more information about the Russian Military became more publicly known about their military, their private military groups such as WAGNER, and how they conscripting their military members. Whether this information is short term collection or long term collection will vary and is dependent upon how long the event or conflict last.
Operational intelligence is focused upon an immediate response to a quickly or approaching or active engagement with a hostile force. The information must be applied quickly to counter it as it is not as valuable after the engagement is complete. This will mostly be HUMINT, with the source being an eye witness to things such as enemy positions, what they're equipped with, assets such as vehicles and artillery that they are using, etc. The analysis of this information is also processed quickly on how to counter it to remove the threat. The timeline for this is very short and is typically done in real time. This can be seen during the war on terrorism in the middle east where terrorist attacks would appear rapidly and at times with little to no warning.
